Sun Ra
Secrets of the Sun
Saturn Records 9954 – re-issue LP

An essential and, until its long overdue reissue in 2008, frustratingly elusive slice of seminal early Arkestra material, SECRETS OF THE SUN was recorded shortly after Sun Ra relocated from Chicago to New York in the early sixties and features a set of spare, brooding compositions performed by one of Ra’s most powerful early ensembles. Clarinetist John Gilmore, guitarist Calvin Newborn and trumpeter Eddie Gale all make meaningful contributions to this dark, sometimes inscrutable outing, which bears traces of Ra’s lingering obsession with doo-wop and his perennial fascination with themes of interstellar travel. ~ John Corbett
Arkestra includes John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Pat Patrick, Calvin Newborn, Ronnie Boykins, Timmy Hunter, and others in various combinations.
