Black Saint 120057 – re-issue LP
Reissue of this free-jazz piece, originally released in 1982.
Dawhe is the first chapter of John Carters Roots and Folklore saga. An epic five-part journey through African-American heritage conceived by the great clarinetist-composer and performed by a lineup including Carter himself, Bobby Bradford – cornet, James Newton – flute, Charles Owens – soprano sax, oboe , clarinet, Red Callender – tuba, Roberto Miranda – bass, William Jeffrey – drums, Luis Peralta – percussion.
It is a very free form of jazz, based on the treatment of different musical forms and related subjects, from ancient African mythology to the blues through the Creative Jazz movement. A strong musical and cultural statement from one of the West Coast’s greatest modern jazz composers.
