Elmo Hope
Hope From Rikers Island
Chiaroscuro 2009 – re-issue LP on 180g vinyl

1963 release for St. Elmo Sylvester Hope (June 27, 1923 May 19, 1967) originally recorded for the Audio Fidelity label as “Sounds From Rikers Island”. Musicians appearing are;Elmo Hope – (piano), Freddie Douglas – (soprano & alto saxophones), John Gilmore – (tenor saxophone), Lawrence Jackson – (trumpet), Ronald Boykins – (bass), Philly Joe Jones – (drums) – also appearing are Earl Coleman and Marcelle Daniels on vocals. This is one of only a handful of dates where Gilmore left Sun Ra’s orbit – a rare appearance. Boykins is also a Ra alumn. The Allmusicreview by Thom Jurek stated “As a musical document, it is an overwhelming success. Hope surrounds himself with musicians whose reputations are now legendary… the level of musical empathy and improvisational reciprocity is inspiring. This is an obscure date but it shouldn’t be, as it features some of Hope and Gilmore’s finest playing, and shows Jones in rare, lighthearted form”.
