Description
HeisMendoza. With one word, the Indianapolis Star captured what Indiana fans had waited 136 years to see: a Hoosier holding college football’s most prestigious individual award. On December 13, 2025, Fernando Mendoza stood at Lincoln Center in New York City and made history as Indiana’s first-ever Heisman Trophy winner. He dominated the voting with 2,362 points and 643 first-place votesnearly a thousand-point margin over runner-up Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt. Then he broke down in tears and delivered a heartwarming speech, at times in his native Spanish, thanking his family, his teammates, and Hoosier Nation.
The numbers told the story all season long: 2,980 passing yards, 33 touchdowns through the air, another 240 yards and six scores on the ground. But Mendoza’s Heisman wasn’t won on stats alone. It was sealed when he got knocked to the turf on the first play of the Big Ten Championship Game, got back up, and led Indiana to a 13-10 victory over the number one team in the country. Big Ten Champion. Number one ranking. Heisman Trophy winner. This is the front page that proves it all happened.
