With their roots in the western Japan city of Fukuoka, miu mau are an art pop trio featuring synth, vocals, guitar, and drums.
The trio create a unique musical world, weaving a sophisticated pop sound containing elements of new wave and post-punk, with indie/avant-pop influences that recall Stereolab, Broadcast, and Buffalo Daughter. Their new cassette EP Motif21 marks their first physical release since 2017’s Drawing.
In addition to the title track with its complex rhythms, explosive guitar, and Hammond organ phrases adding solidity and richness, the EP also includes the new song Furidashi, which was constructed and produced remotely by the members from their current homes in Fukuoka, Takamatsu and Tokyo, and continues the group’s evolution. The B-side features two remixes of “Furidashi” by The Leaf Library/Roland Prague (both the work of multifaceted London-based musician Matt Ashton), vividly showcasing the song’s two contrasting aspects: its new wave pop side and its dreamy, shoegaze-like side.
