Whether serving as a session musician, solo artist, or soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder’s chameleon-like fretted instrument virtuosity, songwriting, and choices of material encompass an incredibly eclectic range of North American musical styles, including rock & roll, blues, reggae, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Dixieland jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel, and vaudeville. Chavez Ravine is a unique entry in the Cooder canon, as it is a concept album that tells the story of Chavez Ravine, the
Mexican-American community demolished in the 50s in order to build a public housing complex that never came to fruition. The Brooklyn Dodgers stadium was ultimately built on the site, as part of their move to LA. Guests appearing on the project include David Hidalgo, Jon Hassell, Jim Keltner, Flaco Jimenez, Little Willie G, Jim Rotondi, Jacky Terrasson, and others.
