While many artists from the 1980s focused on the trends of the day, Cyndi Lauper wanted to do something different, something timeless. With True Colors she proved that she was no longer interested in being just an “icon”. Her intention was to create something that could have proved her artistic values and withstand the test of time. And that’s what True Colors did for her career. Over time, the song True Colors went on to become an anthem, an iconic song that resonated especially in the gay community. It even inspired Lauper to co-found the True Colors Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating LGBT youth homelessness.
