Ephemeral & Fleeting – Modular Music of Japan Various ArtistsNotes from the artists:
Yu Ogu – A Gentle Ceiling
disting NTRings,Just FriendsHikari Duos
A nostalgic sensation recalled from the ceiling that came into view upon waking one morning while back in my hometown. This piece expresses that inner image by layering the delicate noise of Hikari Duos over sounds from Rings and Just Friends sequenced with disting NT.
Jun H. – Sound of uncertainty #001
DJBPM
As someone who usually works as a DJ, most of my productions tend to be bound to fixed BPMs and strict clock structures. In this piece, I experimented with using a continuously evolving looper to generate organic rhythms, extracting their dynamics as clock signals. The result is a track that fluctuates unpredictably, yet carries a strange sense of order.I hope you enjoy the living, breathing groove and melodies liberated from mechanical grids.
Endurance – Coalescence
This track imagines an alien technology with biological properties.
The repeating, looping sounds are mechanical, yet they overlap with cyclical rhythms found in the human body and in plants.
It is an attempt to sonically envision a state in which machine and life are inseparably intertwined.
Yumi Iwaki – Styx Drift
Mutable Instruments Rings
While developing a patch centered around Mutable Instruments Rings, I began to see bubbles drifting and dissolving in a quiet river, and light dancing across its surface. As the boundary between consciousness and sound blurred, and as if guided along a current leading to the underworld, overlapping sounds emerged naturally.I completed the piece by letting these moments exist as they were.
Straytone – Order Chaos
Serge Modular Order Chaos
Centered on a Serge Modular analog oscillator and expanded with digital modules, this piece constructs a sound that oscillates between Order and Chaos, as well as their etymological root, the Greek word (gap, void).
Chie Otomi – exhale
As if it has form,
yet soft, impossible to grasp.
As if it can be followed,
yet always slipping away.
A wind goddess exhales softly
what is born from it,
and what freezes into death.
Kenichi Takagi – SBERM
36
SBERMBuchla200SergeEurorackRainMaker
I was invited to create a track of around 3 to 6 minutes, so I approached it in a minimal style. The title SBERM has no inherent meaning; it is an acronym formed from the equipment used: the Buchla 200 series, self-built Serge modules, and the Eurorack module RainMaker.
HATAKEN – chronofracture
1/2 **Chronofracture**Chrono Fracture
A sequence usually progresses according to a fixed master clock.
However, by altering the probability of that clock, the music can take on an entirely different form while maintaining the same tempo.
When notes and rests appear with a probability of 1/2, the rhythm fragments; adding shuffle introduces a peculiar groove.
What happens if time, like light through a prism, is refracted?
From this idea comes the coined term Chronofracture
Chrono (time) + Fracture (break, fragment): a rupture of time.
In the space where steady clocks and fragmented sounds intersect,
moments we perceive as music emerge.
I hope you can sense this cross-section of that inner landscape.
tatata5 – mete
mete
Mete means boundary.
Between morning and night, life and death, yin and yang, fortune and misfortunethere is always a line.
Along that line, a great whale swims gracefully back and forth.
Perhaps life is something like that.
This piece reflects such an image.
Chihei Hatakeyama – Fable of Transient Soil
Nothing in particular to say.
