Who is William Onyeabor?
Luaka Bop 79- 3 LP set

Little is known about William Onyeabor, and that’s the way he likes it. Though we speak to him frequently and visit him in Nigeria, his complete unwillingness to speak about the past has left us on a long search for information. At the same time, the few bits of conflicting information we have gleaned from others has brought us to the realization that all the information that is out there, and there isn’t a lot, is suspect. So what would have been the normal expository release about someone’s music and history has instead become a search for truth. Who is William Onyeabor and how did he come to make such amazing African electronic music?
In the early 21st century, a shadowy figure rose from the dust that settled atop forgotten record collections throughout Africa, leaving behind a trail of clues in what seemed like a wild goose chase, but in October 2013, Luaka Bop unmasked a phantom: the great William Onyeabor.
